Dutch Architecture

The Beauty of The Netherlands

By Carly Beall In Architecture, Destinations, Europe, Gallery 1 minute 30 seconds

One of my favourite cultural aspects of the cities I visit is how they showcase their diverse histories and tastes through their different forms of architecture and design elements.

Dutch architecture is certainly something to marvel at. Every city I visited I found myself constantly admiring the buildings and structures around me.

If I was to describe all of Dutch architecture in three words I would say it is unique, romantic and colourful. However, there is such diversity in the architecture between cities, that you really can’t group it all together under one category. For instance, Amsterdam is known for its tall, slim houses which are squished together along the sides of the canals. Many of these houses are painted in bold colours with unique shutters decorating the windows. I saw similar structures in Haarlem, although these weren’t as tall and had a more ancient and natural feel to them. The buildings in Utrecht felt less pristine and more comfortable. I’d say they were more ‘classically Dutch’. And the architecture in Rotterdam is so uniquely modern that you might think you’ve traveled to another country altogether.

To celebrate the richness and beauty of Dutch architecture, here are some photos that will surely make you want to hop on the next plane to The Netherlands so you can experience them for yourself.
